Most holiday decorating goes wrong in the same way: more things get added until the sofa looks like a storage pile. The fix is a formula, and it has three pieces.
The formula
- One pattern leads. Tartan, buffalo check, or a print. Pick one and let it be the loudest thing on the sofa.
- One solid supports it, in a colour pulled from that pattern. If the tartan has green in it, the solid is green.
- One throw, folded in thirds over an arm.
Stop there. A fourth piece is where it starts looking like laundry.
Why one pattern, not two
Two competing patterns on one sofa force the eye to keep choosing where to land, and the result reads as busy rather than festive. If you genuinely want two, make them different scales — a large tartan with a small check — and keep both in the same colour family.
A Black Watch tartan cover is a good lead pattern because the greens and navies are dark enough to anchor a light sofa, and it still works in January when the red-and-white pieces have to go away.
The fold matters more than the throw
A throw spread flat over a sofa back looks like a dust sheet. Folded, it looks deliberate:
- Fold in thirds lengthways, not in half. Thirds give a narrower band that holds its shape.
- Drape it over one arm with roughly a third hanging down the outside.
- Push a soft fold into the middle so it is not a flat rectangle.
- Leave it slightly crooked. Perfectly square reads like a showroom.
Scale the covers to the sofa
- 18 x 18 in is the standard sofa cushion and the default.
- 20 x 20 in for a deep sofa, in the back row.
- 12 x 20 in lumbar in a corner, one per section.
Two squares and one lumbar per sofa section reads styled. Four matching squares in a row reads like a furniture showroom. Remember covers are sold without inserts and the insert should be one size up — see pillow insert sizes.
Colour, without going full novelty
Holiday decor ages badly when it is all red and green. Two ways round it:
- Lean traditional but dark. Black Watch tartan, deep green, charcoal. Reads Christmas without reading cartoon.
- Lean warm-neutral. Cream, camel, one muted red accent. Works from November through February.
A printed throw like our gingerbread flannel throw is the piece to make explicitly festive, because it is the easiest thing to swap out in January.
What to do on 26 December
Remove the printed throw and the red pieces. Leave the tartan and the neutral solid. The room reads as winter rather than Christmas, and you have not had to redecorate.
